Internal family systems

What is internal family systems therapy?

Internal family systems therapy (IFS) helps people understand their thoughts and feelings by seeing them as different internal parts. Essentially, the therapy suggests that a person’s mind has several “family members” or parts, and understanding each of them can help someone connect with their core self.

IFS helps with a number of mental health conditions, including anxiety, OCD, bipolar disorder, and more. It’s an effective therapy for developing self-compassion and inner balance.

How internal family systems therapy works

Internal family systems therapy breaks down the mind into three parts beyond the core self: “Exiles” (the most vulnerable part of yourself, often called the inner child), “managers” (the protector that takes care of daily functioning), and “firefighters” (the reactive protector that handles emergency situations).

Connecting with the self

In an IFS session, you’ll explore and connect with different parts of yourself, helping you understand your emotions and thoughts without feeling overwhelmed or ashamed. The goal is to replace fear with curiosity and develop greater self-acceptance in the process.
